В работе приводятся новые доказательства монгольского происхождения династии великих Сельджукидов и новые аргументы в пользу радикального изменения тактики варяжской гвардии в эпоху Алексея Комнина, рассматриваются процессы вестернизации византийской армии накануне Первого Крестового похода. Делается вывод о важнейшем значении половецкого фактора в развитии византийско-русских отношений в начале XII века. В частности, экспансия половцев в придунайских землях связывается с политической консолидацией племенного союза токсобичей, в основе которого находились монгольские кланы, что позволяет рассматривать половецкое наступление на Балканы на рубеже XI-XII веков в качестве своеобразного пролога к монгольским завоеваниям XIII века.
Монография рекомендуется преподавателям и студентам богословских и светских вузов, а также всем интересующимся историей Византии в эпоху Крестовых походов.
