Евангелие от Иоанна существенно отличается от трех синоптических – от Матфея, Марка и Луки. Это побуждает рассматривать Евангелие от Иоанна как самостоятельный источник сведений о жизни и учении Иисуса Христа, существенно дополняющий три других Евангелия.
Евангелие от Иоанна представляет собой по сути богословский трактат, в котором события из жизни Иисуса даны выборочно, но каждое событие помещается в контекст той или иной богословской концепции и наглядно иллюстрирует эту концепцию.
В книге постоянное внимание уделяется параллелям между рассказами Иоанна и повествованиями прочих Евангелистов.
