Публікація є підсумком трирічного дослідницького проекту: у 2013–2016 роках автор 15 разів відвідував міста і села на півдні та сході України, зокрема у зоні бойових дій, де записав близько 300 інтерв’ю. В основу книги покладено результати цього польового дослідження, його обговорення з українськими та західними експертами.
