В основе сюжета – официальные документы, мемуары, дневники и письма, позволяющие узнать о судьбе главных героев: дипломатов, общественных деятелей, журналистов, представителей нацистской верхушки и простых людей. Вместе с послом и его семьей читатель проходит путь от неприятия реальности к осознанию зла, которое несет режим нацистов, а затем – к отчаянным, но безуспешным попыткам предупредить мир о грозящей опасности.
