Началом эпохи гражданских войн в Риме стало выступление Гракхов в 133 г. до н. э., но собственно войны начались в 88 г. до н. э., когда Сулла повел свои легионы на Рим и взял его штурмом. Сначала никто не осознал масштабов случившегося, однако уже через год противники установленных Суллой порядков сами пошли на Рим и овладели им. В 83 г. до н. э. Сулла возвратился с Востока, прервав войну с Митридатом VI Понтийским, чтобы расправиться со своими врагами в Италии. Почти два года тяжелых боев закончились битвой у Коллинских ворот 1 ноября 82 г. до н. э., страшным эпилогом которой явилось избиение Суллой нескольких тысяч пленных, а сам он стал диктатором. Еще несколько месяцев продолжались бои в разных уголках Италии, в Африке, в Испании...
Но не только битвы наполняли эти годы. Медленно, но неуклонно решался вопрос о правах италийцев, менялось административное деление Италии приводилась в порядок финансовая система Рима. Это было рубежное время, на которое пришлись последние годы Суллы, Мария, Антония Оратора, а Цезарь, Помпей, Красс, Цицерон делали первые наги в политике. Впереди были новые гражданские войны и гибель республики.
