В биографии апостола Петра много пробелов. Нам не известно почти ничего о его жизни до призвания на апостольское служение. Во всех четырех Евангелиях он многократно упоминается, но почти всегда находится не в центре повествования, а в тени главного героя евангельской истории – Иисуса Христа. Лишь в нескольких эпизодах он играет самостоятельную роль. Наиболее важный из них – рассказ о его отречении, присутствующий во всех четырех Евангелиях.
Жизнь Петра на определенных отрезках времени хорошо документирована, и именно эти отрезки станут объектом нашего преимущественного внимания: образ первоверховного апостола восстанавливается по ним с достаточной полнотой. Что же касается других периодов его жизни, то сведения о них нам придется собирать по крупицам.
